IMPORTATION & CULTIVATION / MULTIPLICATION
Trials started with 3 imported cultivars in the Free State, Klein Karoo and Olifants River Valley in the Western Cape. Only fields that had never grown any of the Alliaceae family species where chosen.
After a successful first trial, in early 2021 a second, much larger lot of seed of the cultivars that showed best results and adaptation to local conditions, plus 3 new cultivars, were imported.
Building on the success of the initial trial, a second, much larger batch of seeds was imported in early 2021. These seeds included the cultivars that showed the best results and adaptation to local conditions, along with three new cultivars.
After selecting and sizing, the best seeds obtained were replanted.
The first commercial lot of seeds,
with two generations of adaptation to local conditions, was planted in Adelaide, Eastern Cape in April 2023. As of today the garlic has been harvested and farmer is very happy with the results.
BY OCTOBER 2023,
